This is an exciting time to be a facility management professional. Although you will face more challenges than ever before, you will have greater opportunity to add value to your customers through efficient management and improved technology.

The 2007 IFMA Association forecasting retreat identified eight trends that will have an impact on the facility management profession. In this presentation we discuss those trends and how you can develop the knowledge and the skills to be prepared for what the future will bring. We'll show you how you can be prepared for what lies ahead - and amaze your organization with your ability to predict the future!

The New Foundation for Floor Area Measurements

  • International Facility Management Association (IFMA)’s World Workplace, New Orleans, 2007 – presented with Lynne Blair, LY Blair & Associates and Kent Gibson, Zions Securities Corp.
  • IFMA Ottawa Chapter, 2007 – presented with Lynne Blair, LY Blair & Associates

Facility professionals and building owners commonly use two measurement standards to measure floor area in office buildings. These standards form the foundation for lease negotiations, space planning and management, benchmarking and best practice. This presentation introduces a new set of measurement definitions - jointly developed by IFMA and BOMA. Understand what is changing and learn how it will affect your work. Learn how to use the new methodology and taxonomy to measure a square foot "once," then build by it, lease by it, cost by it, plan by it, charge-back by it and operate by it!

In October 2007, Meredith Thatcher and Tanya Irvine presented two seminars as part of the International Facility Management’s program of “i-Sessions” – real-time, interactive internet sessions.

Gaining Knowledge to Manage your ‘Green’ Options

Greening the work environment is a journey. It isn’t all or nothing – every small effort contributes to reducing your carbon footprint. It is better for the planet, creates a healthier place for our people and can increase the profit for our organizations. In this presentation we provide a number of tools and resources and we share practical solutions for energy and water conservation, a list of items that can be recycled, things to consider when greening your supply chain, and why it is important to improve air quality.

Organizations are experiencing higher productivity, lower operational costs, decreased churn rates, and increased asset value – check out the case studies of organizations that have achieved significant improvements.

Customer Service: Aim Ever Higher

Internal customer service is considered by many executives as a corporate strategic advantage. Delivered at the 2007 Corporate Service annual retreat for Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., this presentation highlighted the service profit chain of internal customer service, how to build the relationship, and ways to recover customer trust. In this interactive session, participants each shared their 'nugget' to achieve customer satisfaction.

Shades of Green – Getting to Boardroom Buy-in

  • Real Property Institute of Canada’s 19th Annual Real Property National Workshop, Ottawa, November 2006

We all know how important sustainable work environments are – to our occupants, to achieve organizational success and to the coming generations. The next step is to get commitment and funding from the executives of the organization. Learn how to use the right language, present the appropriate business case, and show your organization how to transition from the status-quo to one of environmental leadership.

Risk & Resilience: Strategic Thinking in Your World

  • International Facility Management Association (IFMA) - Minneapolis Chapter; World Workplace, 2006; Ottawa Chapter, 2006; Management Summit, San Antonio, 2006

Strategic planning is a tool to help you confront challenges, plan for and transition through change and identify new opportunities. On the other hand, strategic thinking is about taking risks in forecasting the future based on what you know internally and what you understand about external trends and events.

As a facility manager your facility strategic plan needs to align with the organization’s strategic plan. How do you do this? How do you create and enhance an environment of strategic and critical thinking? How do you convert the ideas into a plan and then how can you evaluate whether the facility plan has a strategic fit with the corporate plan?

This presentation discusses and connects:

  • the critical aspects of a facility strategic plan and how it aligns with the corporate strategic plan
  • how to achieve buy-in and executive sponsorship of the facility plan
  • applying the concept of strategic thinking and moving outside your comfort zone
  • the profound shifts that are influencing or will influence our future.

Leading Virtual Teams

  • IFMA’s World Workplace, San Diego, October 2006

In this presentation, Carroll and Guy Thatcher help you enhance your understanding of the environment within which virtual teams operate, and discuss the advantages and limitations of that environment. They share their knowledge of virtual teams, based on their professional experience working in virtual teams and their experiences teaching post-graduate courses via the Internet to students around the world.

Engaging the Enterprise

Presented as the keynote address at the FM:Systems 2006 User’s Conference in Chicago in September 2006

“It is an honour for me to be invited as the keynote speaker for the FM:Systems user’s conference. It is an excellent opportunity for companies to share best practices and to learn how to better utilize technology to improve their facility and space planning initiatives.”

In June 2006, Meredith Thatcher was the Subject Matter Expert for a live webcast seminar in the Master Facility Executive Certificate Program. The six-seminar program is hosted by the Building Owners and Managers Institute (BOMI) and Building Operating Management magazine, and is designed for senior facility executives.

The seminar, Lead and They Will Follow, covered the topics: defining your leadership style, becoming a change agent, ethical decision making, creating a leadership environment, and knowing when to let go.

Change, Chaos, Contrasts and Compromise - Workplace of the Future
  • Presented at international conferences, to organizations, and as an audio seminar, from 2001 to 2005. Most recently presented at the Alberta Association of Architects’ Banff Session, March 2006.

The future is bringing about accelerating change. How do we house 'boomers' and 'Xers'? When do we need to start adjusting for the aging workforce? How are we going to accommodate emerging occupations, what skills are required? Who is the knowledge worker and what do we need to know about them? What are the new technologies and what opportunities are there? Change is stress enough. We must reduce the stress created by the work environment. This presentation looks at a number of upcoming changes affecting the workplace of the future, makes connections between them, and identifies practical applications.

Passing the Torch: Corporate Succession Planning

  • International Facility Management Association’s World Workplace, Philadelphia, PA, October 2005
  • Total Facility Management (TFM) Show, Chicago, IL, 2005

The successful passage of the leadership role is one of the most challenging of all corporate transitions. The recent attention to knowledge management has highlighted the impact of corporate amnesia, when skilled and experienced staff leave an organization without planning for succession. When the person leaving is one of senior management, the potential impact is even greater. Those most affected by the departure are the successors left behind. Succession includes the passing on of the corporate vision, culture, knowledge, authority and responsibility. Carroll and Meredith represent first and second generations who have made a succession transition, with Meredith becoming President of Carroll Thatcher Planning Group in 1997.

Wireless Buildings – Are you Ready

  • New Zealand Property Institute 2005 Conference, Wellington, NZ, 2005

Wireless technology is changing the way people live, work and play. Access to information anytime and anywhere is rapidly becoming the norm. Property and facility managers need to take appropriate steps to make sure that they and their tenants can take advantage of this technology without creating data traffic conflicts or exposing sensitive information. This presentation looks at the opportunities and impact of wireless on the building infrastructure and the occupant environment, as well as leasing ramifications - all from a layman's perspective.
